The critically acclaimed comedy, Modern Family, which premiered in 2009, is the brainchild of Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, who serve as writers and executive producers of the television series. Set in Los Angeles and filmed in mockumentary style with only one camera, the show features a well-crafted cast and cleverly written plots surrounding the daily travails of a father and his two adult children's respective families.

The series opens with aging newlywed Jay (Ed O'Neill) Pritchett and his much-younger buxom Latina bride, Gloria (Sofia Vergara), settling in together with Gloria's studious and precocious tween, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). Jay's sensitive son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), featured with his equally sensitive life-partner and stay-at-home-dad Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), prepare for new beginnings with their adopted Vietnamese daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons). Jay's daughter, stay-at-home wife Claire (Julie Bowen), is married to self-proclaimed "rad-dad" Phil (Ty Burrell). They are the proud yet exasperated parents of Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke (Nolan Gould).

In addition to a brilliantly assembled regular cast, the show features top-billed guest stars, such as Benjamin Bratt portraying Manny's dead-beat dad Javier Delgado. Shelly Long made an appearance early in the first season, playing Jay's ex-wife and mother to Mitchell and Claire. In season three, Greg Kinnear plays the role of Phil's business partner while he attmepts to woo Claire.

The show and cast have earned numerous nominations, awards and accolades throughout all three seasons. In 2010, the series won Emmys for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series. Eric Stonestreet also won for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The same year, the show was recognized with a GLSEN Respect Award for its portrayal of diverse American family life, and the entire cast from the show won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy.

In 2011, the show was nominated for 17 Emmys, winning awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and Ty Burrell's Outstanding Supporting Actor for a Comedy Series. In 2012, Modern Family earned the Golden Globe in the Best Comedy Series category. Additionally, the series has won awards recognizing excellence in cinema editing, production design, directing and outstanding achievement in cinematography.

Modern Family's satirical take on the 21st century's diverse family life has hit a chord in the collective funny bone of the American audience, with ABC renewing the series for a fourth season. In the 2010 interview, "Solo Talk with a Family Man," Ty Burrell attributes the shows success in part to the warm relationships shared between members of the cast and crew, "... we have a real, authentic affection for each other, and we are an odd little family off-camera. We just don't have a bad egg on set, and that's counting the writing staff and the directors."
